Free Home Insulation Grant
Up to 35% of your home's heat is lost through uninsulated walls, and 25% through the roof. Get free wall, loft, and underfloor insulation through the Warm Homes: Local Grant and start saving hundreds of pounds every year.
Why Is Home Insulation So Important?
Insulation is the single most effective way to improve your home's energy efficiency. Without proper insulation, you're literally heating the outdoors — warm air escapes through walls, the roof, floors, and gaps around windows and doors.
A well-insulated home stays warmer in winter and cooler in summer, requires less energy to heat, and provides a more comfortable living environment. It also helps prevent issues like damp, condensation, and mould — which can cause serious health problems, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
The Warm Homes: Local Grant covers the full cost of professional insulation installation for eligible homeowners, so there's no reason to put up with a draughty, expensive-to-heat home any longer.
Types of Insulation Available
Cavity Wall Insulation
Most homes built after the 1920s have two layers of wall with a gap (cavity) between them. Cavity wall insulation fills this gap with insulating material, dramatically reducing heat loss.
- ✓Small holes drilled in the outer wall
- ✓Insulating material injected to fill the cavity
- ✓Holes sealed and made good
- ✓Minimal disruption — often done from outside
Solid Wall Insulation
Older homes (typically pre-1920s) have solid walls with no cavity. These can be insulated either internally (from inside) or externally (from outside), providing significant energy savings.
- ✓Internal: insulated boards fixed to inside walls
- ✓External: insulation applied to outside, then rendered
- ✓External can improve appearance of your home
- ✓Internal may slightly reduce room size
Loft Insulation
Around 25% of heat in an uninsulated home escapes through the roof. Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective energy-saving measures, laid between and over the joists in your loft space.
- ✓Mineral wool laid between loft joists
- ✓Additional layer laid across the top
- ✓Recommended depth: 270mm
- ✓Quick and non-disruptive installation
Underfloor Insulation
Cold floors aren't just uncomfortable — they're a sign of heat escaping downward. Underfloor insulation prevents this, making ground floors warmer and reducing the energy needed to heat your home.
- ✓Insulation fitted between floor joists
- ✓Suitable for suspended timber floors
- ✓Can be installed from below if accessible
- ✓Makes ground-floor rooms noticeably warmer

Benefits of Proper Home Insulation
Lower Energy Bills
Spend less on heating your home. Savings of £200-£580 per year are typical depending on the type of insulation installed.
Consistent Comfort
No more cold rooms, draughts, or hot-and-cold fluctuations. Enjoy even temperatures throughout your entire home.
Reduced Damp & Mould
Proper insulation prevents condensation and moisture build-up, reducing the risk of damp and mould growth.
Higher Property Value
A better EPC rating makes your home worth more. Buyers actively seek energy-efficient properties with lower running costs.
