How It Works
From application to installation — here's what to expect when you apply for the Warm Homes: Local Grant.
Submit Your Application
Complete our simple online application form with your personal details, property information, and current energy situation. The form takes just a few minutes to fill in.
You'll need your address, contact details, and information about your property type and current heating system.
Council Review
Once you've applied, your local council will review your application. They will contact you within 10 working days to discuss your eligibility and next steps.
The council will verify your details and check whether your property and circumstances qualify for the scheme.
Home Energy Survey
If you're eligible, the council will arrange for a qualified surveyor to visit your home. They'll assess your property and recommend the most suitable energy efficiency improvements.
The survey is completely free and will identify which improvements will make the biggest difference to your home's energy efficiency.
Improvements Installed
Based on the survey results, approved improvements will be scheduled and installed by qualified professionals. All work is fully funded — you pay nothing.
Common improvements include wall insulation, loft insulation, air source heat pumps, smart controls, and solar panels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the grant really free?
Yes. For eligible homeowners, all improvements are fully funded by the government through your local council. Landlords may need to contribute towards some improvements.
How long does the process take?
Your council will contact you within 10 working days of your application. The total timeline from application to installation varies depending on the improvements needed and your council's schedule.
Do I need to have an EPC certificate?
Your home needs an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G to qualify. If you don't have one, you can check your home's current rating on the GOV.UK EPC register. If your home doesn't have an EPC, one may be arranged as part of the process.
Can I choose which improvements I get?
The specific improvements will be recommended based on the home energy survey. The surveyor will identify which measures will be most effective for your property.
I'm a tenant — can I apply?
Tenants should speak to their landlord about applying. The landlord will need to consent to any improvements being made to the property.
What if my application is rejected?
If you don't qualify under the Warm Homes: Local Grant, there may be other energy efficiency schemes available to you. Contact the helpline on 0800 098 7950 for advice on alternative options.
